C.I.S.V – Teacher info
Children's International Summer Villages (CISV) is a global community of dedicated volunteers creating opportunities for all ages to experience the excitement and enrichment of cultural diversity through our educational programs, including at international camps. CISV is founded on our belief that peace is possible through friendship -- and that the real difference can be made by engaging young people. We educate and inspire action for a more just and peaceful world.
CISV is a worldwide organization promoting peace and understanding through children. Dr. Doris Allen, a psychologist at the University of Cincinnati, formed the organization in 1951. Her premise was that teaching children to live together as friends could create true and lasting global peace. Her idea led to the formation of a Village experience for 11-year old children. The first Village had 55 11-year-old participants from nine different countries. There are now 60 member countries and many types of programs.
CISV programs emphasize friendship as an important element in learning to resolve conflicts. In CISV programs, children from different parts of the world come together and learn to appreciate one another by finding similarities and celebrating differences. As an independent, non-political, non-denominational volunteer organization committed to the value of each individual, CISV does not practice or tolerate discrimination based on race, religion, political affiliation, social or economic background.
CISV endeavours to stimulate the development of inter-cultural respect, international understanding, leadership, and cooperative skills to prepare youth for effective leadership roles in creating a peaceful society.
